ANKA Homelands Mapping Project - Foundation Map

'Homelands are the backbone for Aboriginal art. They are where all the patterns and designs come from - from the land'.
— Djambawa Marawili, ANKA Chair, 2019.

Overview

At the 2018 Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, ANKA introduced its Homelands Foundation Map showing the location of over 700 Homelands within ANKAs four regions: Arnhem Land, Darwin/Katherine, Kimberley and Tiwi Islands.  The map was initially constructed using Global Positioning Satellite data provided by the NT and WA governments.  ANKA then conducted consultations with its membership to further confirm Homeland locations, correct names, spelling and other relevant information.

A visual display of images highlighting the importance of Homelands for art production was also shown, along with a visual representation of all Homelands listed on the Foundation Map.  ANKA members were encouraged to review the lists to determine if their Homeland was present and report any that were not.
